About Event

We have this theory that every song has two lives — the one before a song is released and the one after. The first life is the story of the artist and why they decided to write the song. The second life is all about how the song shows up in our lives and what role it played for us.

Playlist Storytellers is a live show that lets you experience the second life of songs.

Over the past two months we've found four local people with amazing true stories about a song that changed their life.

Four storytellers. Four stories. Four songs.

"It doesn’t matter what a song is about, what matters is what it means to us. We never forget the songs that made us feel something"

Ben Parry (he/him)

Ben runs the Toronto Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge a new education institution hosting lectures and reading groups. He writes about competence and what it takes to be useful at Skillful Notes.

Sherry Ning (she/her)

Sherry is taking a deeper look at things. She writes about experiences you've had but don't know how to describe—from heartbreak to the feeling of self-sabotage to the joy of boredom. Her blog lives on www.sherryning.com, and her book, The Pluri Society, is for sale on Amazon.

Adam Hammond (he/him)

Adam is an English professor at the University of Toronto. He is the author of several books, most recently The Far Shore: Indie Games, Superbrothers, and the Making of JETT (Coach House, 2021). He releases music under the name Single Pigeon.

Melanie Dahling (she/her)

By day, Melanie is a Psychotherapy student and “Second in Command” at women-led comedy label Howl & Roar Records. By night, she’s a comedian, show producer, and wrestling ring announcer. Her debut album, ‘Greetings From The Big City’, was featured in The Toronto Star’s Top 10 Canadian Comedy Albums of 2023.

Ahmad Jabbir (he/him)

Ahmad Jabbir is an international keynote speaker currently touring across six Canadian provinces. He is the former Marketing Manager at Seek Discomfort, the clothing brand of the YouTube channel Yes Theory, which has over 9 million subscribers. During COVID, he launched a project where he met one-on-one with 100 people across 89 cities and 45 countries to hear their stories.
