About Event

The Toronto Islands can feel like a work of magic. They appear as if by grand design a natural oasis, a beautiful respite from the noisy & tumultuous city. Beautiful beaches, pristine tree cover. A gift, bestowed by nature.

Not so fast.

The islands are a human-made creation. For one, they are not really "islands" at all. They began as a sand bank, attached to the Toronto mainland until a storm in the 1850s.

The land has been used as a military harbour, an amusement park, a residential neighborhood. They have been a place of engineering, a place of leisure, a place of sexual exploration, a place of living for millenia. The islands were made, not born.

Duration: 3.5hrs

Starting Location: The tour begins at the statue of Jack Layton near Jack Layton Ferry Terminal at the Harborfront of Toronto, a 10 minute walk south of Union Station.

Ending Location: Hanlan's Point Ferry. You can choose to return to the mainland by Ferry, or enjoy the rest of the day on the Islands.

Price: This tour operates on a pay-what-you-can basis. There is a $5 booking fee to secure your spot on the tour and take the ferry. At the end of the tour, you can pay whatever you feel the tour was worth (cash or card both accepted). Most guests choose to pay between $20 - $30 per person.

Ferry: This tour involves a trip to the Toronto Islands via the ferry. Your ferry fee is covered by the booking fee.

Accessibility: The ferry and the Toronto Islands are very accessible: ramps, paved surfaces, flat roads. This tour is therefore suitable to most mobility devices.
